We are currently seeking a Junior Meteorologist - Hydrologist for a full-time position as part of an ongoing contract in Silver Spring, adjacent to the Silver Spring metro station.

The successful candidate will receive a contingent offer based on the outcome of a government background check. This may take several weeks, and the candidate cannot begin actual employment until the background check is successfully completed.

We are looking for a “Junior” Meteorologist with strong PostGres and LINUX background needed to support the monitor and control functions of the NWS Network Control Facility (NCF). The NCF is a 24x7x365 facility providing Help Desk Type Support and Network Operations support to the Weather Forecast Offices, NWS National Centers, and River Forecast Centers. Support includes correcting site processes and interface system issues, wide area network (WAN) problems and satellite broadcast problems. The person must also be able to independently detect and troubleshoot failures, interact with forecast office personnel and third-party vendors for site support, and accurately document all actions taken and provide customer feedback.

Additional responsibilities include responding to incoming customer phone calls and ITO alarms utilizing LINUX/Unix based programs, restarting software packages, rebooting servers and workstations, clearing out corrupt data; editing scripts, running configurations, swapping packages, ordering failed disks on servers, removing diskspaces; restarting EDEX, qpidd, puppet, and LDAD processes when necessary; ticketing all issues including all work performed on the site servers.

Requirements:

• Qualified applicants will be subject to a security investigation and must meet the requirements to obtain and maintain a NAC (National Agency Clearance) government security clearance.
• A Bachelor's Degree in Meteorology or a closely related field obtained within the last 18 months.
• A cumulative GPA of 3.0+ is strongly desired. (Please include your GPA on your resume.)
• Ability to work a flexible shift schedule including day, evening/nights and weekends (12-hour shift 4 days on/4 days off).
• Strong experience using RedHat Linux and PostGres.
• Excellent communication skills in the English language – both verbal and written.
